During the first half of 2026, leading OEM brands including HP, Canon, Ricoh and Kyocera consecutively issued firmware updates to restrict conventional third-party generic chips. The domestically developed RISC-V structured chips have passed full-range model verification, enabling adaptive compatibility with diversified firmware versions and effectively preventing remote equipment lock imposed by original manufacturers. Supported by AI simulation technology, the R&D cycle of dedicated decoding chips for newly-released copiers has been shortened from 14 months to four months. From March to May, compatible chips tailored for Xerox B105, Canon, Kyocera and other newly-launched equipment were officially put into mass production.

Domestically manufactured 3.5–4.5μm nano polymer toner has achieved large-scale commercial production, delivering print quality comparable to original OEM products with color aberration controlled within 2% and a 19.4% reduction in fusing energy consumption, which remarkably eliminates common defects such as toner scattering and background fogging. Modular separate-drum-and-toner configuration has become the mainstream design; replaceable core components facilitate product remanufacturing and slash solid waste generation by 65%. Besides, mass production of UV invisible anti-counterfeit toner has been accomplished to satisfy high-value demands for confidential documents and invoice duplication.

Issued in April, MIIT’s industrial regulation stipulates green-oriented office consumables shall account for no less than 35% of governmental procurement by the end of 2026, while compatible and remanufactured products are prioritized in public bidding activities. Multiple regional government institutions have abolished restrictive clauses limiting purchases to OEM-only supplies, lifting the penetration rate of compatible consumables to 88% at county-level public entities alongside a 12% year-on-year rise in repeat orders from state-owned enterprises. Standardized after-sales provisions covering 180-day warranty and toner leakage compensation have accelerated the phase-out of unqualified inferior commodities

The EU PPWR packaging regulation has come into force in 2026, mandating over 65% recyclable or biodegradable composition for export packaging and accelerating the substitution of traditional petroleum-based plastic with eco-friendly pulp-based materials. The updated EPEAT 2.0 standard prohibits original equipment suppliers from restricting third-party compatible supplies via firmware encryption and requires newly-produced copiers to be compatible with certified remanufactured consumables. Meanwhile, China has reinforced full-lifecycle carbon footprint traceability management across the consumables sector.

Approximately 63% of currently operational copiers were manufactured prior to 2020 without anti-compatibility chip locks, forming steady fundamental demand for aftermarket products. High-yield toner cartridges rated at 7,000 to 15,000 pages per unit enjoy robust market uptake with a 31% month-on-month procurement growth among printing service providers, cutting per-page printing cost down to 40% of original counterparts. Bulk color refill toner matching mainstream copier models also witnesses sustained market expansion.

Overall, the compatible consumables industry is evolving toward environmental sustainability, regulatory compliance and cost optimization in 2026. Outdated low-end production capacity will be continuously eliminated, whereas products equipped with proprietary R&D technology and complete compliance certifications are poised to capture incremental market opportunities.
